The Water Cycle

We have been learning about the Water Cycle to better understand how important water is to Planet Earth and all living things.

A simple experiment for the Water Cycle.

You need a good size zip lock bag and with a sharpie draw an outline of the water cycle.

1. Warm up some water until steams starts to rise but do not let it boil.
( 1/2 cup of water in the microwave)
2. Add blue food colour to the water to represent the ocean.
3. Pour water in a zip log bag and zip it up.
4. Hang the bag upright on a window with strong tape and observe the changes.
5. Water evaporates and rises and condense at the top of the bag.
6. Water droplets appear on the inside of the bag. As water droplets become larger they will slide
downward that resembles the flow of the water cycle.

Precipitation - water droplets fall from the atmosphere in the form of rain, sleet, snow or hail.
Condensation - the cooling of water in the atmosphere changing gas to a liquid.
Evaporation - the process that occurs when water changes from a liquid to a caused by heat.
Transpiration - the passage of water from a plant to the atmosphere.

Rocks and the Rock Cycle

Three types of Rock and the Rock Cycle

Inspired by the Rock cycle we made Borax Crystals

We used:
1 L of boiling water
9 tablespoons of borax
4 drops of food colouring
Pipe cleaners

Whaea Robyn added 9 tablespoons of borax to the boiling water. Stir until borax starts to dissolve.

As the solution cooled some students had a turn at stirring ...

and adding the food colouring to the solution.

Finally stir some more.

We made shapes with the pipe cleaners

and tied them onto skewers. We placed them
into different coloured borax baths and allow
to rest over the weekend.

After the weekend we found that the pipe
cleaners had formed thick layers of crystals.

Earthquakes

What is an Earthquake

Earthquakes

Today the class learnt about Earthquakes. Whaea Robyn put up a video of how Earthquakes work. It was cool and funny. I learnt that the tectonic plates cause Earthquakes to happen. An earthquake is the shaking of the surface fo the Earth.
They are caused by sudden movements of the Earth's techtonic plates that sends
waves of energy that travel through the Earth. by Noah

Volcanoes

We have been learning about Volcanoes and land formations.

Ingredients for exploding volcano:
Baking soda, white vinegar and food colouring
